Test Sites

The INDICATE project will create a decision support tool that will help with the development of urban master plans; support the decision maker with respect to the integration of technologies and renewables in their neighbourhood which will help reduce consumption and demand on fossil fuels; and support the optimisation of existing systems in cities that are already reaching ‘Smart’ City status.  As such the tool can be used to support the decision maker regardless of the stage of development of the city or its technological advancement.  To demonstrate each of these aspects of the tool, 3 test sites have been choosen, 2 in Dundalk, Ireland and 1 in Genoa, Italy.

 

Genoa is the capital of Liguria and the sixth largest city in Italy, with a population of 600,000 within its administrative limits on a land area of 240 km2. Genoa, which forms the southern corner of the Milan-Turin-Genoa industrial triangle of north-west Italy, is one of the country’s major economic centres.

Dundalk is a city in Ireland, located between the border of Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland and as such is equidistant with Dublin and Belfast. As a result it is on the main transportation route between this two major cities and its bus and train routes service both cities via Dundalk.

The third test site located in Dundalk, forms another element of the Living Lab. Smart Energy Efficiency Dundalk (SEED) and currently incorporates a University Campus (Dundalk Institute of Technology, DKIT), Great Northern Heaven - 16 smart aware apartments, a Community Youth Centre, 10 Local Authority houses and a Secondary Education College.
